This country has skipped the credit card era entirely and moved straight into a smartphone-driven ecosystem. If you land here expecting to tap your physical Visa or Mastercard at a local noodle shop, you will find yourself in a very awkward position. Preparing your smartphone before you arrive is the absolute key to a smooth journey.

The most important step is setting up your digital wallet. Today, both Alipay and WeChat Pay allow international tourists to link their foreign credit cards directly to the app. I always advise my guests to download Alipay at least a week before their departure, complete the real-name identity verification using their passport, and link their cards. Once set up, you can scan QR codes to pay for everything from a 3-yuan bottle of water at a convenience store to a meal at a high-end restaurant. It completely levels the playing field and lets you explore like a local.

Next, let’s talk about internet access and the Great Firewall. Many first-time visitors mistakenly think they can just rely on hotel Wi-Fi and free public networks. However, to access Western platforms like Google Maps, Instagram, or WhatsApp, you need a reliable workaround. I highly recommend purchasing an international roaming plan from your home carrier or buying a travel eSIM before you land. These digital data plans naturally route through international servers, automatically bypassing the local firewalls without requiring you to fiddle with unstable VPN applications.

Finally, fill your phone with a few lifesaver applications. While Google Translate is excellent, make sure to download the offline Chinese language pack before you fly, as cellular signals can drop in remote regions. For navigation, Apple Maps works surprisingly well within China and displays English street names accurately. Don’t let the technology scare you. With a little bit of advance preparation, China’s digital infrastructure stops being a barrier and becomes the ultimate tool that makes your travel safer and more convenient than ever before.

In my ten years of guiding international travelers across China, the biggest culture shock my guests face isn’t the language barrier or the exotic food—it is China’s incredibly advanced cash-free society.
